Its a big question on what permalink structure should we be using for our websites or blogs. I have used used almost all of them that comes by default in the wordpress permalink section specially the one I used most was http://www.bloggertalkz.com/2009/05/sample-post/.
Once when I tried to change the structure and after the changes were made all my posts were inaccessible from Google. This happend because google was showing the old links which doesnt exist anymore.Later I did some study of permalinks and have come to to conclusion that having the post name after the domain is the best permlink to have (No category, no Date or month etc..) i.e. http://www.domain.com/PostName. You can understand better if you look at my post URL’s in this blog. To have just the post name after the domain do the following -
1)Go to Permalinks Settings
2)Select Custom Structure under Common Setting section
3)Type /%postname%/ in Custom Structure and save changes.

Now, the next question is how to change my URL without having any after affect and also not losing google page rank. Well dont worry Platinum SEO is the solution for this problem. All you need to do download Platinum SEO Pack, upload it to your plugins folder and then activate it. Go to Platinum SEO settings and ensure that “Automatically do 301 redirects for permalink changes” checkbox is ticked.

Hurray!!! now you have the best permalink structure optimised for search engines.Google just loves it.
One last thing to do in order to double check that your old permalinks are redirected to new URL -
1) Go to http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php
2) Type your old URL (in my case “www.bloggertalkz.com/2009/04/09/6-simple-ways-to-improve-internal-linking-on-your-blog/”)
in the textbox and submit.
3)Please check if the Location is pointing to the new URL or custom URL. If so then you have succeded in making a SEO friendly permalink without losing the page rank.

If you have suggestions or differ in opinion please use the comment area to share it.
