Glossary
Here I have tried to put some of the common terms used by bloggers today. I know this is very little and there is much more but, to start with I have tried to list down some. Do keep sending me you suggestions as well so that we can keep the list growing. I hope this will be of help specially to all those who are new to blogging.
1.FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – It is a network protocol used to transfer data from one computer to another through a network, such as the Internet.
2.Web Hosting – It’s a type of internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. The Webhosts are companies that provide space on server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity.
3.Bandwidth – Rate of data transfer measured in bits per second
4.Blog – A website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of descriptions of events. These entries can be even graphics or videos. The blog entries or commonly known as posts are displayed in reverse-chronological order.
5.Bookmark – A link stored in a web browser for future reference.
6.Browser – A software application that is used to access the World Wide Web.
7.CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) – A data format used to separate style from structure on Web pages.
8.Cookie – It’s a text file stored on a user’s computer by a web site so that preferences are remembered on future requests.
9.CPC (Cost Per Click) – The cost or cost-equivalent paid per click-through.
10.IP (Internet Protocol) – The Internet Protocol or IP is the method by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet.
11.Feeds – A feed is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Bloggers syndicate a feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it.
12.RSS – It is a way of providing content to the user’s browser or desktop in an efficient way. By using RSS feeds, the user can stay updated on the news or posts from the blog for which the user has subscribed RSS feeds.
13.Feed Burner – FeedBurner is a feed management provider. It provides custom RSS feeds and management tools to bloggers, podcasters, and other web-based content publishers
14.Domain – Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages, for example google.com
15.URL – Uniform Resource Locator. It is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use, and the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located for example http://www.google.comwhere http is the protocol.
16.Spam – Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it.
17.Favicon – A small icon that is used by some browsers to identify a bookmarked Web site.
18.HTML – It stands for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is the main language used for web pages.
19.Impression – Its the number of time an advertisement apprears in a accessed web page. Advertisers use impressions to measure the number of views their ads receive, and publishers or bloggers often sell ad space according to impressions.
20.Inbound Link – When some other blogs or websites links to your blog or post then its an inbound link for you.
21.Outbound Link – When you link your post to some other blogs or websites then its an outbound link for you.
22.Traffic – It is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a blog or a web site.
23.Keyword – A keyword is a word or concept with special significance. Good keywords are important to increase your website rankings, traffic, and profit.
24.Tags – A tag is a keyword or term assigned to a piece of information.
25.Search Engine – The name its explains. It is a search engine designed to search for information on the World Wide Web
26.SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via natural search results for targeted keywords.
27.Meta Tags – These are tags used by search engines to allow them to more accurately list your site in their indexes.
28.Technorati – It is an Internet search engine for searching blogs.
29.Mybloglog – It is a social networking website for the blogger community.
30.Google Adsense – It is an advertisement serving program run by Google.
31.Google Analytics – A free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website.
32.Page View – A page view is a request to load a single page of an Internet site.
33.PPC (Pay Per Click) – It is an Internet advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites, such as blogs, where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an advertisement to visit the advertisers’ website.
34.Reciprocal Links – A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two websites to ensure mutual traffic.
35.Unique Visitors – A unique visitor is a statistic describing a unit of traffic to a Web site, counting each visitor only once in the time frame of the report.
36.Web Directory – A web directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links.
37.Whois – It is a query or response which is widely used for querying an official database in order to determine the owner of a domain name, an IP address, or an autonomous system number on the Internet.
