It is important to have a good internal linking strategy is important for a few reasons:
a) It helps to increase page views and encourage readers to stay on your blog longer by providing attractive links to content that may interest them.
b) It helps to improve the search engine rankings for your posts.
Ok now let’s look at the 6 simple ways to improve the internal linking throughout your blog. Remember you need to put these into action and you’ll be well on your way to creating a more user-friendly blog along with improving your search engine rankings.
1. Link to related posts
Linking to posts on similar topics can help your readers to find additional content that may interest them. Just as importantly, it can also improve the number of internal links to your blog posts. You can manually create related links at the end of your posts, or you can use a plugin to do it for you. WordPress users can download the Related Entries plugin.
2. Use a sitemap
Sitemaps are not only important for helping visitors find what they’re looking for, but they’re also an easy way to increase the amount of internal links to your important pages. I’m not talking about XML sitemaps created for search engines (although they can be important too), but rather a sitemap for your readers with links to all of your posts, or at least your most important ones.
WordPress users can use the Sitemap Generator Plugin from Dago Design to automatically create a sitemap for their blog. This plugin creates a helpful sitemap page with links to your posts arranged by category.
3. Use text links throughout posts
As your writing your blog posts keep an open eye for opportunities to link to older posts. If you have text relates to the topic of an older post, create a link. As you build more and more content this will be even easier. It’s also a good idea to periodically go back through some of your older posts to look for linking opportunities to more recent posts that did not exist at the initial time of publishing.
4. Include links to most popular posts on your sidebar
Linking to the most popular post in your blog is a good way to increase your page views and also to improve your internal link strength. This also can either be done manually or with the use of a plugin. Doing it manually will require updates and changes whenever you want to feature new posts, whereas a plugin like MostWanted will eliminate the manual effort.
5. Write a series of posts
One easy way of building up the number of internal links going from one post to another is to write a series. As the series is written and published each post can link to the others. If you have a very long post, consider breaking it into a series. Be careful not to do this all the time as your readers may start to feel like you are using them to gain page views.
6. The aLinks plugin for WordPress
WordPress users can take advantage of the aLinks plugin to automatically create links for commonly used phrases throughout their blog posts. The plugin is designed for use with internal links as well as external links.

My favorites on your list are #3 and #5, both of which I do, though I do #3 way more often. I’m not really sure if it increases readership or not, but I figure the internal linking can only help my site overall.

Hi Mitch,
Thanks for your comments. The points 3 and 5 and quite useful to drive in traffic to your blog and increase the page views as well. This also ensures that the reader stays longer time in your blog.

Nice article. Thanks!
Regarding to #3, it is a bit different from what I think. Albeit the link thorough a post is important but that will distract readers from finishing your post. I always see posts stuffed with links that are disturbing me from reading. That will definitely defeat the “Call To Action” purpose. Agree?

Regarding your comment on being distracted by lots of links or being lead off the page by a more interesting link, would you suggest instead having those other links at the end of a post? I try not to write a post in such a way that I make need to make references which need attributing to some other author or source. So would putting …for more information…. type links at the end be a solution when presenting factual info or quoting some one else? (I got here via the 31 day problogger course. Gina

Hi Gina,
What I mean is keeping the link amount minimum.
However if you are saying about factual articles, the you needs references. If you have too much of them to insert within the article, perhaps you can insert them at the end of each relevant paragraph, labeled with reference. I think that is neater.
Just my humble opinion anyway.

Hi Daren,
Nice to see you here. Well I think linking back to your old post is a good thing and will give readers more insight on the article or topic they are reading. But, having said that I also agree that putting up too many links in a post will become an irritating factor for readers which should be avoided.
By the way how are you doing with your blog? You have put some good information on webhosting deals out there

I’ve recently started doing more internal linking within my posts, and it has made a world of difference in terms of keeping people on the site longer, and getting traffic to older articles.
Another way is use of the CommentLuv system. Posts that are linked on DoFollow sites will gain PR if the article they reside on gets PR as well.
Great tips!

Thanks for your comments. Yes, internal linking really helps readers stay longer in your site but we also need to make sure there aren’t too many links in a single post. CommentLuv is an excellant system and I love it

Hey Krish, I hope that you don’t mind my linking to one of my posts, but it is very relevant to this particular post, especially point #6. It’s about the Related Post Plugin which gives you total control as to which posts you select as being related to the post you’re currently working on. It is extremely fast and adds the link seamlessly into the post. You can see an example in that post.
I also use the Dago’s Sitemap generator and find it an extremely useful blogging tool.

No problemo Sire and thanks for your comments. Related Post Plugin is cool and I love using it. Infact I have used the plugin in this blog as well. RPP in a way helps you to link your old post if you are lazy doing it manually through the content. I am sorry I have no idea about Dago’s Sitemap generator but what I use is Google sitemap. I will visit your site soon

Hi Krish, I have linked to you through 31 day problogger. One other tip which is related to your internal link list post would be to add relevant link(s) to list posts you are proud of below your signature on any e-mail you send out, and depending on who you are writing to, have several options ready. Update the links over time. I am taking your advice to heart for my blog. I also think keeping people cruising around the blog works best if articles are crisp, eye catching and full of variety. Gina
